CES: SilverPAC Shows off Logitech Killer: evolution 5500

Posted January 9th, 2010 by Brandon A. DuHamel

California-based corporation SilverPAC Inc. who recently won a 2010 Innovations Award from the International CES, was in Las Vegas this week at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) showing off their award winning remote control design, the evolution 5500.

The innovative product is aimed squarely at the home theatre enthusiast market and has the potential to take some market share away from the reigning king of this area, Logitech’s Harmony line of remote controls.

The SilverPAC evolution 5500 is set to go on sale in February 2010

The evolution 5500 is a fully interactive remote control experience that takes controlling your home theatre system beyond merely clicking a few buttons. The remote control’s software is based on Windows embedded CE 6.0 R2 and features a 4.3″ (480 x 272) LCD touch screen, 1GB built-in flash and 256 MB SDRAM, and can support up to 100 devices.

Additionally, there is a built-in microphone and speaker and wi-fi. Most compellingly, the 5500 supports “gadgets” that can be downloaded to the remote via wireless or USB so users can get weather, Twitter, stocks, calendars, connect to Facebook, or sync photos from their Microsoft Live.com accounts right from their remotes.

The evolution 5500 features all the traditional features you’d expect from a remote control as well, such as UEI Database, activity and learning functions, and firmware upgrades via USB.

But that’s not all: SilverPAC is also offering an additional accessory to go along with the 5500, the EVOLUTION IP Speaker, which is a wireless multi-room system that has 4 high-quality 20 watt speakers and a 15 watt subwoofer that can stream music wirelessly from a Windows PC or Media Center.

With all of these features wrapped into one, the evolution 5500 can in many respects be considered a Squeezebox and Harmony merged — the best of both worlds, perhaps? We’ll be able to see how well it all pans out when the remote ships in February of 2010.
