Personally, I'm waiting for "American Werewolf: The Doris Day Cut". The last edition (on DVD) was so grainy that I was distracted away from the story on several occasions. It sounds like this edition is as bad.

I just KNEW somebody was going to reference the director's quotes on this (so drooled over at AVSForum.) The fact is this transfer does now look like it was dragged through the sewer and most of us won't want to own it. But that's OK, because the small minority who just want to see excessive grain will be happy. (Cue the lecture on how everyone else needs to be educated on how wonderful and correct it is to view the film through fog.)

I can agree with that. Certainly some of the issues should have been taken care of.

No worries. I certainly agree with the latter half of your statement. I've seen some transfers completely wrecked with edge enhancement, DNR, HD-DVNR -- you name it. But, it's not really the softness that bothers me the most with this title, it's the wavering issues with the source that could have been fixed without harming picture quality. :-)

I apologize for sounding harsh. The internet is so impersonal that sometimes you forget real people are on the other side.

I don't disagree with you that it is soft, but it looks natural. Perhaps the original source is this poor, or that's just what the director wanted. It still beats a lot of botched transfers that are all too common these days.

I think if you read some of my reviews of much older films that still have their grain structure intact, but also look far better than An American Werewolf in London, you'll see that that is not my philosophy at all. :-)

Thanks for the comment. :-)

It looks like a high quality transfer that is faithful to the film.

What did you want them to do? Remove the grain and detail, add sharpness, and crush the whites and blacks to make it pop? This isn't Transformers 2. It's a 30 year old film that was made on a small budget.

Stop giving studios the wrong impression that they should destroy classic film just so it looks modern. It is what it is, so respect that.
